TRAVELS FROM PREVIOUS YEARS
We made 49 stops in 9 states and visited 6 National Parks & 3 National Seashores
We took delivery of THE POD on Friday the 13th of April (fortunately we're not the superstitious type). Spent one month at a local Broward County Park and left on our journey on May 12th. First thing we did was head south for one last visit to Key West and a sixth and final visit to Dry Tortugas National Park. We then made a big u-turn and traveled north to South Miami for visits to Biscayne and Everglades National Parks. We zig-zag through Florida to visit relatives in St Pete/Tampa and then another zig-zag north to Jacksonville to bid farewell to friends.
Finally crossed our first state line into Georgia on July 5th and visited the historic town of Savannah. Moved on to South Carolina and visited Charleston. Moved inland for a visit to Congaree National Park and quickly returned to the coast to avoid the summer heat.
Next up was the Outer Banks of North Carolina with the Cape Lookout and Cape Hatteras National Seashores. A quick visit to Virginia Beach before crossing into Maryland and visiting Assateague National Seashore. We then visited a trifecta of beautiful state parks in Delaware before returning to Maryland. We used a state park in Maryland as our basecamp to make 5 one-day long visits into Washington D.C. before heading for the mountains of Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. We slowly headed southwest and on to the Blue Ridge Parkway before visiting three campgrounds in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
A return to northeast Georgia before making our way west to the highest point in Alabama, Cheaha State Park, where we experienced our only encounter with snow. Back through Georgia and a return to Jacksonville, FL just before the year end holidays. Spent New Years with visiting friends in a quiet and remote Florida State Park to finish up the year.
